The River Beane is an important part of our village, shaping both our landscape and our local wildlife. Protecting this rare chalk stream is vital to the character and wellbeing of our community.
The River Beane Restoration Association (RBRA), entirely volunteer‑run for more than 30 years, has played a major role in safeguarding the river. Their work has helped reduce water abstraction from the Beane Valley by over 80%. Citizen‑scientist volunteers monitor invertebrates, chemical pollutants and water quality, while Water Vole surveyors track the progress of this iconic species following its reintroduction in 2022. The RBRA also leads efforts to tackle invasive species such as Himalayan Balsam and Giant Hogweed, with plans to expand practical conservation work along the river.
