Butterflies and moths are a vital part of our natural heritage, acting as sensitive indicators of the health of our environment. Yet despite decades of dedicated conservation work, these beautiful species continue to decline at an alarming rate. Research shows they are disappearing faster than many other well‑studied groups of plants and animals, making the challenge both urgent and complex.
Butterfly Conservation has spent more than 50 years gathering data, restoring habitats, and championing the recovery of threatened species. For many butterflies and moths, we already know the steps needed to halt their decline — but to put these solutions into action at scale, the charity must dramatically expand its capacity and influence in the years ahead. Protecting these species also supports countless other forms of wildlife and strengthens the ecosystems we all depend on.
Here in our area, the Hertfordshire & Middlesex Branch plays a crucial role. With over 1,000 members, the branch covers the whole of Hertfordshire working on local monitoring, habitat improvement, and community engagement.
