Walkern has always been a village shaped by its landscape — from the chalk streams and hedgerows to the fields and woodlands that surround us. But the wildlife that once felt abundant and familiar has changed over the decades. To understand how, we’re inviting long‑time residents to share their memories of the creatures that once filled our lanes, gardens and skies.
What the Project Involves
We’re gathering personal recollections of wildlife in Walkern from years gone by — the species you remember seeing often, the sounds that defined the seasons, and the natural places that were once alive with activity. These memories will be paired with today’s observations from local residents, school groups and wildlife surveys.
By placing “then” alongside “now,” we hope to build a living picture of how our local environment has changed over time.
How to Share Your Memories
We welcome contributions from anyone who has lived in Walkern long enough to notice how the wildlife has shifted. You can submit:
- Short written recollections
- Photographs, old or recent
- Descriptions of places where wildlife once thrived
Submissions can be sent in by email and submitted to info@wilderwalkern.org.uk to or can be written or handed in at one of our community events. If you prefer to talk through your memories, we can arrange a short recorded conversation which we will then write up for the website.
What We’re Trying to Achieve
This project isn’t just about nostalgia — it’s about understanding change so we can shape a better future. By collecting these memories, we aim to:
- Highlight species that have declined or disappeared
- Celebrate the wildlife that still thrives
- Identify habitats that need protection or restoration
- Strengthen our community’s connection to the natural world
- Inspire practical action to support biodiversity in Walkern
Your memories will help us build a shared story of Walkern’s wildlife — one that honours the past while guiding the choices we make today
