Purpose and Spirit
The Walkern Terra Carta is a simple, positive pledge to care for the land, water, wildlife, and village we share. It celebrates the small, everyday actions that each of us can take—steps that, together, strengthen our sense of belonging and protect the place we call home.
In the spirit of our village’s link to Magna Carta we pledge a new covenant with the earth – protecting the land, water, wildlife and community we share.
This Terra Carta is built around a set of core themes, each with a handful of practical commitments. They are intentionally modest, easy to adopt, and designed to grow in impact as more residents join in.
Caring for Nature and Wildlife
- I will leave a small patch of my garden wild to support pollinators.
- I will plant at least one bee‑friendly or native species each year.
- I will avoid using pesticides or herbicides where possible.
- I will keep bird feeders, baths, or bug hotels where I can.
Reducing Waste
- I will reduce single-use plastics by choosing reusable bags, bottles, and containers.
- I will recycle correctly and help neighbours understand what goes where.
- I will repair or repurpose one item before replacing it.
- I will donate unwanted items locally rather than throwing them away.
Saving Energy and Water
- I will switch off lights and appliances when not in use.
- I will wash clothes at lower temperatures when possible.
- I will reduce water waste by fixing drips and using water butts if I have a garden.
- I will choose energy-efficient bulbs and appliances when replacing old ones.
Supporting Local and Sustainable Choices
- I will buy from local producers, shops, and markets when I can.
- I will choose seasonal foods more often.
- I will support village initiatives that protect green spaces.
- I will share surplus produce, tools, or skills with neighbours.
Cleaner Travel
- I will walk or cycle short distances within the village when possible.
- I will car-share for regular trips where practical.
- I will combine errands to reduce unnecessary journeys.
- I will keep my vehicle well-maintained to reduce emissions.
Community Stewardship
- I will join or support local litter-picks at least once a year.
- I will report fly-tipping or environmental damage promptly.
- I will use register waste removers to dispose of my rubbish to avoid fly-tipping.
- I will help keep footpaths, verges, and shared spaces tidy.
- I will encourage others kindly and lead by example.
