Swift & House Martin Conservation Presentation

May 5 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

As part of the Wilder Walkern project, we are taking steps to support Swifts and House Martins in the village. We are pleased to announce that the Hertford Swift Group will be giving a presentation on how residents can help these important but declining species.

During the session, the Group will explain why Swifts and House Martins need our support, what practical actions households can take, and how nest boxes or artificial nest cups can be installed on suitable homes. If enough people are interested after the presentation, the Group will offer to supply and install Swift boxes locally and advise on supporting House Martins.

Please confirm your attendance

Why Swifts Need Our Help
The Common Swift has declined in the UK by more than 62% over the last 30 years, losing over a million birds. Added to the Red List in 2021, Swifts are struggling due to the loss of traditional nesting spaces in older buildings. Installing Swift boxes or Swift bricks is a proven way to support their recovery and can also benefit other urban wildlife such as House Sparrows, Tits and Bumblebees.

Walkern still has an active Swift population, and with community involvement, we can help strengthen it.

Swift Boxes & Installation
Approx. £35 per box, including installation (price may vary depending on total orders)

Boxes are installed 5m or higher, so professional fitting is recommended

The Hertford Swift Group has installed over 1,600 boxes across Hertfordshire with residents, schools and community groups

Supporting House Martins
House Martins—also red‑listed—are still present in Walkern. The Group can advise on installing artificial nest cups near existing nest sites (also around £35).

If you have any questions before the event, you can contact us at info@wilderwalkern.org.uk.
We look forward to seeing you there and working together to support Walkern’s wildlife.
