Walkern Bug Hotel Now Open

The Walkern Bug Hotel is now officially complete — a brilliant new wildlife habitat built entirely through community effort, donated materials and plenty of enthusiasm.

On Saturday 15 August, residents gathered at the back of the High Street playground to construct the hotel, with children especially enjoying filling each layer with natural materials.

🧱 How It Was Built

A brick base with hedgehog and frog gaps supports stacked wooden pallets, each packed with twigs, tiles, pine cones, bark, deadwood, leaf litter and hollow stems. A sloped, tiled roof finishes the structure.

🤝 Community Effort

All materials were donated, and the build was a true team project. Thank you to everyone who contributed — from material donors to the volunteers who designed, built and photographed the hotel. A special thanks to Graphix for generously providing the sign.

🐞 Why It Matters

Bug hotels offer safe spaces for insects such as ladybirds, bees, spiders and woodlice to shelter, nest and overwinter, supporting a healthy local ecosystem. Looking after it is simple: keep it dry, avoid disturbing the contents, and refresh natural materials every couple of years.

🌱 A New Wildlife Haven

The Walkern Bug Hotel is a wonderful example of community action for nature. It will provide a valuable habitat for local wildlife and an engaging feature for families visiting the playground — and we hope it’s the first of many small projects that help nature thrive across Walkern.
