Launch of the Wilder Walkern website
Following our successful kick‑off meeting, we are delighted to announce the launch of the Wilder Walkern website — the new home for information, guides, news, and updates about all things Wilder Walkern.
Our first meeting was a great starting point, but it also highlighted the need for a central place where people can easily find information and stay connected. Some residents were unable to attend, and others didn’t hear about it in time. The website will help ensure that everyone has access to the same information going forward. We are also exploring the idea of a dedicated Wilder Walkern Facebook page, and we will continue to use existing channels such as Walkern News & Chat, the Walkern Action Facebook groups, and the Walkern Journal.
Now that the website is live, we can focus on the real purpose of Wilder Walkern: helping nature recover, strengthening our community, and giving people the tools to make things happen. We’ve already begun work in some of the village’s communal areas, and there is much more to come.
What came through clearly at our first meeting is that Wilder Walkern should be fun, inclusive, and community‑led. Yes, it needs structure and coordination, but it’s also about creativity, shared ownership, and bringing people together. Not everyone will want to get involved, and that’s absolutely fine — but for those who do, we want to offer opportunities to learn, contribute, and enjoy being part of something positive.
We are now in contact with the Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust about carrying out a baseline nature survey of the village’s communal areas. More details will follow.
We will need to fundraise and roll up our sleeves from time to time, but the more people who join in, the stronger Wilder Walkern will become. Whether you want to take part or simply follow along, you are always welcome. We are grateful to those who have already come forward to help, including Jenny, Becky and Holly. A particular thanks to Jenny, who has kindly donated six bird boxes, which we will be installing in the High Street playground.
The new website includes information about Wilder Walkern, helpful guides, and details of upcoming events and activities. Here’s a preview of what’s happening:
1. Opening of the Froghall Lane Peace Garden
The old cemetery on Froghall Lane is now under the care of the Parish Council. We hope to transform it into a peaceful space for residents and wildlife alike, with a bench, planters, and small pop‑up events to promote Wilder Walkern. More details will follow.
2. Walkern Wildlife Garden Map
A new village‑wide map is being created to highlight gardens taking wildlife‑friendly actions such as No Mow May. Please share what you’re doing in your own garden by sending details to info@wilderwalkern.org.uk.
3. Wilder Communal Spaces: Letting Nature Lead
Several communal areas in the village will be allowed to “go wild,” with wildflower plantings and mini habitats for insects, birds, and small mammals
These spaces will act as living demonstrations of how nature flourishes when given room.
4. Action for Swifts
We will be hosting a meeting with a local swift conservation group, who will:
- Offer advice on installing swift nesting boxes
- Potentially provide a special offer on swift boxes
Swifts are in decline, and we hope this initiative will help support their recovery. Please keep an eye on the website for the event date.
5. Wilder Walkern Poster Competition (Under 10s)
We will soon be launching a range of children’s activities, including a poster competition for under‑10s celebrating local wildlife. Winning entries will be displayed around the village to inspire everyone to help nature thrive.
6. Photograph of the Month
Each month, the website will showcase a wildlife photograph taken in or around Walkern — from foxes and finches to butterflies and bats. Details on how to submit your photo are on the website. We’d love to see your pictures.
7. Wildlife Talks & Guest Speakers
A series of talks will take place throughout the year, featuring wildlife organisations and local experts. Dates and details will be posted on the website.
8. Wildlife Memories: Then & Now
Long‑time residents will be invited to share memories of the wildlife that once filled Walkern. These recollections will be paired with today’s observations to help us understand how the landscape has changed — and how we can protect what remains. Details on how to submit your memories are on the website.
9. Fundraising Events
We need funds to support nature recovery in the village and are exploring opportunities to raise money.
We are already considering a sponsored bike ride, using existing cycle routes around Stevenage. If you are interested in taking part, please contact us at info@wilderwalkern.org.uk. If enough people come forward, we will set the event up.
We are also exploring the idea of an art exhibition, where a portion of the proceeds from artwork sales would be donated to Wilder Walkern.
We would love to hear your fundraising ideas — perhaps you’d like to host a Coffee & Cake Morning, or maybe a village‑wide bake event could be organised. Please share your suggestions.
